You Mean Words Aren't Supposed to Move on a Page?: Karen Murphy at TEDxHickory

NOTE: Due to recording problems on the day of the event, the audio in this video is not of good quality. We apologize for the sub-optimal viewing experience. Karen Murphy has a BA in Elementary Education, and an MA in Higher Education/Adult Education. She has over 20 years experience in teaching in various capacities. For the past 5 ½ years Mrs. Murphy has been working in the Basic Skills Department of Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute in Hudson, North Carolina, teaching GED and Adult High School students. Five years ago, after literally tripping over a box marked 'Irlen Syndrome' in a storage room at school, Karen was instantly fascinated with Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome (Irlen Syndrome) and became certified to identify and help students and others with this syndrome develop into more successful, confident readers. Her goal is to help as many people as possible trip over the often misunderstood box and learn about Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome, in the hope that fewer students will be impeded by this easily treatable condition. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
